Defenseman Nate Schmidt will participate in the 2013 Washington Capitals Rookie Camp this week. Schmidt, 22, split last season between the University of Minnesota and Hershey (AHL). The 6’, 195-pound defenseman earned nine goals and 23 assists in 40 games with Minnesota last season and was named to the WCHA First All-Star Team and the Minnesota John Mariucci Most Valuable Player. Schmidt finished the season ranked tied for third among all NCAA defensemen with 32 points including a career-high nine goals. He also led all collegiate defensemen and ranked tied for sixth among all skaters with 19 power-play points this season. The St. Cloud, Minnesota, native appeared in eight games with Hershey, tallying one goal and three assists.

Schmidt will wear jersey No. 88 and will participate in the Capitals practice today at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Today’s practice will take place at 4:15 p.m.
