The Washington Capitals travel to the United Center tonight to play the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks in the 2013-14 regular-season opener.
Washington’s opening night roster features two 19-year-olds: Connor Carrick and Tom Wilson. Carrick registered 44 points (12g, 32a) and 79 PIM in 68 games for the Plymouth Whalers (OHL) last season. Wilson earned 58 points (23g, 35a) and 104 PIM in 48 games for Plymouth in 2012-13. Wilson made his NHL debut last season in Game 5 of the ECQF against the New York Rangers. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time Washington had a pair of teenagers appear in a season opener was 2003-04 (Steve Eminger and Boyd Gordon, both 19 years old).

Olympics Honor Ovi – Washington captain Alex Ovechkin was the first Russian Torchbearer for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Ovechkin carried the Olympic Torch after its ignition in a ceremony at Olympia, Greece, on Sunday. The Moscow, Russia, native traveled to Olympia, Greece, following the Capitals 6-3 preseason win against Philadelphia on Friday, Sept. 27, then returned to Washington on Sunday, Sept. 29. The Torch will now travel through all 83 Russian regions, visiting 2,900 towns and settlements.Fresh Faces – Three rookies (Connor Carrick, Michael Latta, Tom Wilson) made the Capital’s opening night roster this season. Tuesday marks the first time Washington will open the season with a rookie on its roster since 2010-11 (John Carlson, Marcus Johansson and Michal Neuvirth).
