74 Strikes Again – John Carlson scored a goal and earned an assist on Tuesday against Columbus, marking his 14th career multi-point game. Carlson has earned five points in his last six games (11/2-11/12: 4g, 1a) and ranks third in the NHL in goals by a defenseman this season (4).

Goal Scoring Joel – Joel Ward has scored a goal in three consecutive games (11/9-11/12), matching the longest goal-scoring streak of his career. Ward has now posted a three-game goal-scoring streak four times in his career. The Toronto, Ontario, native has scored nine goals in 19 games this season, passing his goal total of eight from 2012-13 (39 games). Through games of Nov. 13, Ward ranks first in the NHL in shooting percentage (29.0%), second among Washington skaters in goals (9) and tied for fifth on the team in points (13).  

Caps Connections – Steven Oleksy was born in Chesterfield, Mich., located approximately 30 miles north of Detroit. Oleksy played collegiately at Lake Superior State University in Michigan from 2006-09, where he registered 20 points (3g, 17a) and 110 penalty minutes in 113 games. Washington head coach Adam Oates made his NHL debut with Detroit on Oct. 10, 1985. Oates played in parts of four seasons with the Red Wings, registering 199 points (54g, 145a) and 65 penalty minutes in 246 games from 1985-1989.

Familiar Foes – Martin Erat has played 74 career games (regular season and playoffs) against the Red Wings, the most of any player on Washington’s roster. Erat has registered 33 points (15g, 18a) in 57 regular-season games against Detroit and seven points (1g, 6a) in 17 playoff games against the Red Wings.

First Timers – Michael Latta, Steve Oleksy, Nate Schmidt, Alexander Urbom and Tom Wilson will each play at Joe Louis Arena for the first time in their NHL career tonight.
