Caps Today, 4/3/15

Today’s Storyline

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored two goals on Thursday at Montreal. Ovechkin’s first goal on Thursday marked his 473rd career goal, passing Peter Bondra (472) for first place on the Capitals franchise goals list. Ovechkin scored his 472nd goal in his 755th career game, reaching the milestone in 206 games fewer than Bondra (961). Ovechkin now holds the Capitals franchise record in goals (474), points (893), power-play goals (175), game-winning goals (80), overtime goals (15), shots (3,813) and multi-goal games (100). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ovechkin joins Patrick Marleau (San Jose) and Patrik Elias (New Jersey) as the only active NHL players who are the career leader in goals for their current team.

In addition, Thursday marked Ovechkin’s League-leading 15th multi-goal game of 2014-15 and his 100th career multi-goal game. Ovechkin’s 15 multi-goal games this season mark his career-high and sets a Capitals franchise record. Since Ovechkin entered the NHL in 2005-06, Jarome Iginla (66) is the only player who is within 40 of Ovechkin’s multi-goal-game total. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ovechkin (756) needed the sixth-fewest games in NHL history to reach 100 multi-goal performances, trailing Wayne Gretzky (452), Mike Bossy (553), Mario Lemieux (553), Brett Hull (561) and Jari Kurri (685).

Thursday also marked Ovechkin’s 16th career multi-power-play goal game and his second of the season (11/26 at NYI). The Moscow native ranks first among active players in career multi-power-play goal games and his 24 power-play goals this season ties his career-high and Capitals franchise record, set last season. Ovechkin leads the NHL in power-play goals (24), goals (52), game-winning goals (11) and shots (378) this season and ranks tied for second in points (79).
