Caps Today, 10/4/17

October 4, 2017
The Capitals begin the 2017-18 regular season on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre. This marks the first time Washington has faced Ottawa in their season-opening game. The Capitals hold a 44-36-5-5 all-time record against the Senators and an 18-23-1-3 record in games played in Ottawa. This season marks the ninth time since 2006-07 that Washington will open the season on the road. The Capitals have a 4-4-2 record in season openers over the last 10 years and a 2-0-1 record in away openers since Barry Trotz joined the team in 2014.

Alex Ovechkin has 558 goals in 921 career games. In 112 career games played in the month of October, Ovechkin has 74 goals. His 0.661 goals per game rate in October is the second-highest single-month scoring rate, behind only April (70 games, 48 goals, 0.686 goals per game). Ovechkin is just 78 games away from reaching the 1,000 game milestone. That would make Ovechkin the first player in franchise history to reach the mark playing entirely for the Capitals.
