Caps Today, 1/17/18

January 17, 2018
The Washington Capitals return from their bye week tomorrow night when they face the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center for the third time this season. Washington defeated New Jersey 5-2 in their previous meeting at Prudential Center on Dec. 30.

After recording two assists against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 12, Alex Ovechkin is now two shy of 500 career assists to become the second player in franchise history to reach the mark (Nicklas Backstrom, franchise leader with 568 assists). In addition, Ovechkin would become one of 15 active players with 500 career assists and one of just four active players to record at least 500 career goals and 500 career assists (Jaromir Jagr, Marian Hossa, Patrick Marleau). Ovechkin is one of eight active players to record at least 1,000 career points, ranking fifth with 1,084 points, and is one of only two active players on that list with fewer than 1,000 games played (Sidney Crosby: 1,074 points in 828 games).

Ovechkin, who currently leads the NHL with 28 goals and is on pace to record 51 goals this season, is one of just three players to record at least seven 50-goal seasons (Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy: nine).
