Today’s Storyline

The Capitals face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena tonight in the second of four meetings between the teams this season. The Capitals won the first matchup 4-3 at Capital One Arena on Dec. 2. Washington holds a 10-5-0-2 record all-time at Nationwide Arena and a 20-7-1-4 record all-time against Columbus.

Evgeny Kuznetsov has five assists in his last four games and is on a four-game assist streak, which is tied with Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson for the longest assist streak this season (Backstrom has two four-game assist streaks). Kuznetsov's 35 assists lead the team this season and are tied for 14th in the NHL through games played Feb. 4. This season, Kuznetsov has recorded an assist in 23 games this season, and the Capitals are 16-4-3 when he records an assist. Kuznetsov's 164 career assists rank eighth among players selected in the 2010 draft, while his 1.93 assists per 60 minutes of play ranks first.

Feb.6, 1990: The Capitals beat the Quebec Nordiques 12-2 at Capital Centre, establishing franchise records for most goals scored and largest margin of victory. Nice and Djoos - Christian Djoos has recorded an assist in three-straight games. and his nine assists rank seventh among rookie defensemen this season. Additionally, Djoos' 12 points (3g, 9a) are tied with Madison Bowey for the sixth-most among rookie defensemen. This season, Djoos has recorded a 52.52 shot attempt percentage at five-on-five (574 for, 519 against), the sixth-highest percentage among rookie defensemen this season.

Barry Good - Barry Trotz passed Lindy Ruff for fifth on the NHL's all-time list in games coached (1,494) on Feb. 4 against the Vegas Golden Knights. On Dec. 30, Trotz earned his 737th career win, passing Ruff for fifth on the NHL's all-time coaching wins list. Trotz has posted a record of 186-80-32 since joining the Capitals in the 2014-15 season. During that span, Washington ranks first in cumulative wins (186), points (404), goals (902), goals against (714) and power play percentage (22.9). Trotz is one of just 10 coaches in NHL history to reach 1,400 games and is six games shy of becoming the fifth coach to reach 1,500 games. Trotz has posted a career NHL record of 743-559-60-132.

Power of Four - Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov have played together for 619:49 minutes this year at five-on-five. The pair has 590 on-ice shot attempts for and 584 against (50.26 shot attempt percentage). The two have been on the ice for 29 five-on-five goals and 22 against, and 56.03 percent of their on-ice face-offs together have been outside of the Capitals' offensive zone. Additionally, Christian Djoos and John Carlson have played together for 374:19 minutes at five-on-five. The pair has 404 on-ice shot attempts for and 350 against (53.58 shot attempts percentage), 21 on-ice goals for and 15 against. Djoos and Carlson have also been on the ice for 219 scoring chances and have allowed 191.

Blue Jacket Bullies – The Capitals have earned a point in 10 of their last 11 games against the Blue Jackets (8-1-2) and in 19 of their last 23 games against Columbus (15-4-4). In addition, Washington has earned a point in six straight games at Nationwide Arena (4-0-2). Nicklas Backstrom has 22 points (6g, 16a) in 26 career games against Columbus, while Alex Ovechkin has 15 goals in 27 career games.

Sweet Nicky - Nicklas Backstrom scored his 11th goal of the season versus the Vegas Golden Knights on Feb. 4. With that goal, Backstrom is now one goal shy of 200, and is looking to become the fifth player in franchise history to record 200 goals (Alex Ovechkin: 590; Peter Bondra: 472; Mike Gartner: 397; Mike Ridley: 218). Since entering the NHL in the 2007-08 season, Backstrom's 568 assists rank third in the NHL (Henrik Sedin: 585; Joe Thornton: 581). Backstrom is three assists shy of passing Shane Doan and Frank Mahovlich to rank 100th all-time in NHL history
