Caps Today, 3/2/18

March 2, 2018
The Capitals are preparing for a Saturday matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the NHL’s ninth installment of the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game, which first began in 2014.

When the Capitals take the ice at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, it will mark the first game played in Maryland since Nov. 26, 1997, the Capitals final game at U.S. Airways Arena, located in Landover. In that final game, the Capitals faced the Montreal Canadiens, losing 6-5. Capitals defensemen Mark Tinordi was credited with the final goal at U.S. Airways Arena, with Dale Hunter and Kelly Miller assisting on the goal. In total, the Capitals played 919 games at U.S. Airways Arena, previously named USAir Arena and Capital Centre, finishing with a record of 444-356-119-0. Michael Gartner is credited as the Capitals’ all-time goal scorer at U.S. Airways Arena (226), all-time leader in assists (221) and points (447). Don Beaupre is credited with the most wins (70) at U.S. Airways Arena as a goaltender, while Jim Carey has the lowest goals against average (2.23) and most shutouts (nine).

This Day in Capitals History

March 2, 1996: Jim Carey tied Don Beaupre’s single-season franchise record with his fifth shutout of the year as the Capitals beat the Boston Bruins 2-0 at the Fleet Center. Carey made 28 saves, while Craig Berube and Joe Juneau scored in the Capitals win. Carey finished the 1995-96 season with a League-high, and franchise-record, nine shutouts. Carey capped off the year by winning the 1996 Vezina Trophy.
