Alex Ovechkin scored against the Dallas Stars on March 20, marking the 602 nd goal of his career, passing Jari Kurri for sole possession of 19 th all-time. Ovechkin now sits six goals shy of tying Dino Ciccarelli (608) for 18 th on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. The goal also marked Ovechkin’s 44 th of the season, which leads the NHL, six goals shy of reaching the 50 goal mark. Should Ovechkin reach the 50 goal mark, he would join Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky as the only players with eight 50-goal seasons (Bossy and Gretzky each recorded nine 50-goal seasons). Ovechkin, 32, is also looking to become the second player since the 1967-68 expansion era to lead the NHL in goals at the age of 32 or older (Phil Esposito led the NHL twice in goals just before his 33 rd and 34 th birthday).

With a 42-24-7 record and 91 points, the Capitals sit in first place within the Metropolitan Division.

This Day in Capitals History

March 21, 1985: Bobby Carpenter became the first U.S.-born player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season, reaching the mark in the Capitals’ 72 nd game of the 1984-85 campaign. Carpenter reached the milestone with a power-play tally from Scott Stevens and Mike Gartner in an eventual 3-2 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens. Gartner would also record 50 goals during the 1984-85 season, marking the only time in franchise history that the Capitals had multiple 50-goal scorers.
