Caps Today, 5/12/18

May 12, 2018
The Washington Capitals won Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final 4-2 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. That marks the 27 th time in franchise history the Capitals have won Game 1, and they improved to 9-8 on the road in Game 1s overall.

Washington improved to 6-1 on the road in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, outscoring opponents 24-15 in those contests. The Capitals lead all teams in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a franchise-record 15 power-play goals, seven more that the next-closest club in the Conference Finals (WPG: 8). The record for most power-plays goals in a postseason is 35 (since 1933-34), a mark set by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1991 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

With an assist in Game 1, John Carlson recorded his 12 th point of the playoffs. That’s tied for the Capitals' franchise mark for points by a defenseman in the playoffs (Kevin Hatcher, 1988: 5g, 7a; Scott Stevens, 1988: 1g, 11; Carlson, 2016: 5g, 7a). Carlson’s 12 points are tied for the second-most among defensemen in the playoffs, and Carlson has recorded a point in eight of the Capitals’ 13 games. In 89 career playoff games, which is the second most in franchise history among defensemen, Carlson has 47 points (16g, 31a) and one game-winning goal.  Carlson’s 16 career playoff goals are tied for the most in franchise history (Hatcher), while his 47 points are one shy of tying for third in franchise history (Hatcher). Carlson’s 68 points (15g, 53a) led the NHL this season and are the seventh-highest single season total by a Capital in franchise history. Carlson became the third Capitals defenseman to lead the NHL in points since 2000 (Sergei Gonchar: 2001-02, 59 points; Mike Green: 2008-09, 2009-10: 73 and 76 points, respectively).

Alex Ovechkin (1g, 1a) scored his 55th career postseason goal to pass Nicklas Lidstrom, Rick MacLeish and Steve Thomas (all w/ 54) for sole possession of 44th place on the NHL’s all-time list. He has scored nine goals in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs (9g, 8a), five shy of the franchise record for most in postseason set by John Druce in 1990 (14).

Braden Holtby (19 saves) improved to 9-3 in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs (2.04 GAA, .925 SV%). His nine wins are three shy of the franchise record for most by a goaltender in a postseason, a mark set by Olie Kolzig in Washington’s run to the 1998 Stanley Cup Final (12-9).
