Caps Today 9/17

Washington continues its 2013 preseason schedule tonight as the team plays the Boston Bruins in the Baltimore Hockey Classic. Tonight’s game marks the second time the Capitals have participated in the Baltimore Hockey Classic. Washington played Nashville (2-0 loss) in the inaugural game on Sept. 20, 2011 in front of 11,082 fans at Baltimore Arena.

Baltimore was home to a minor league hockey team, the Baltimore Skipjacks, from 1981-1993. The Skipjacks were Washington’s AHL affiliate from 1988-93. Former Capitals goaltender and current head goaltending coach Olie Kolzig played for the Skipjacks from 1990-92.

The Capitals are 3-0-1 against the Bruins in preseason games since 2008-09. The two teams have not met in the preseason since the 2010-11 season. Washington was 2-1-0 against Boston in the regular season last year. Forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin each recorded three assists in three games against Boston last season. The teams will meet once more this preseason (Sept. 23) and three times during the regular season.
